Superfood: carefully-curated clean eating in Colombo

By Marianne David

Superfood – a restaurant offering harvest bowls, healthy wraps, vegan desserts, and meal plans – is a vegan’s dream come true.

Launched in 2017, it was one of the first healthy restaurants in Colombo and has been very well received by its clientele, who form a loyal customer base that keeps coming back for more goodness.

Vegan dining dream come true

Given the limited options in the Colombo for vegan diners, who are often forced to choose from a handful of items at most when eating out, Superfood offers a range of carefully-curated clean eating options that is truly impressive, delicious, and healthy.

With over 90 ingredients on the menu, of which a whopping 70% comprises vegan options, this is a place that is sure to win every vegan’s heart.

Meatless Mondays tried out two items from the Superfood menu via UberEats: the Tropical Smoothie Bowl and Make Your Own Bowl, both of which allow diners to put together the dish they desire.

The vegan items are specially marked on the delivery platform, making it even easier for diners.

Tropical Smoothie Bowl

The Tropical Smoothie Bowl, which is beautifully presented, offers a choice of toppings so you can personalise this healthy meal to suit your palate. We selected mango and apple and the combination was just perfect.

A filling, refreshing, and guilt-free dining option, this bowl is the perfect start to the day and extra appealing on warm days such as these.

Make Your Own Bowl

The Make Your Own Bowl option offers diners such a wide choice that it’s super fun to make the selections and have them serve up exactly what you want to eat.

You start off with a choice of bases – mix salad leaves, red basmati rice, or warm quinoa – and then move on to the choice of ingredients, of which there are many. Having chosen a base of warm quinoa, we then went with bell pepper, cabbage, garlic carrot, roasted butternut squash, and grilled zucchini.

Our choice of protein was grilled oyster mushrooms, while the sauce of choice was the garlic tahini dressing and the topping was spicy sunflower seeds. There are a host of add-ons as well, for diners who want that extra oomph.

The end result looked and tasted divine. This is a very generous portion that is bursting with good health, lots of flavour, and a myriad of colours – a meal you won’t regret!

You don’t feel heavy, sluggish, or sleepy after digging into these bowls; instead, you feel energised and also happy that you made a healthy choice.

The Superfood story

Superfood has been receiving a lot of good feedback ever since it opened and has a loyal customer base and a wide social media following.

While the main Superfood restaurant is located at No. 75A, Kynsey Road, Colombo 7, and is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., they also have another outlet at Racecourse which is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The outlet at Racecourse, which was opened in collaboration with the Fitness Connection gym, mainly focusing on juices, protein shakes, and wraps, and is a miniature version of the main restaurant.

A dietician/nutritionist is the force behind the goodness served up here and puts the dishes together carefully focusing on macros and micros.

Customised meal plans

Taking healthy eating to the next level and enabling healthy lifestyles, Superfood also offers its clients customised meal plans.

The meal plans are done in line with the customer’s requirement, depending on whether they want to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain their weight.

Why vegan?

While people increasingly want to undertake a vegan path and there are plenty of vegan ingredients available in Sri Lanka, a Superfood speciality is that diners can create their own meals. While the restaurant works with some 90 ingredients altogether, the majority are vegan options.

Super active on social media, Superfood can be seen at @superfoodlk on Facebook and Instagram.
