KIKU Colombo: Japanese fusion at its finest

A stunningly decorated café that is both cute and quirky, KIKU Colombo is sure to impress!

With one-of-a-kind Japanese fusion dishes on their extensive menu, such as rice-based udons, sandwiches, waffles, and a variety of desserts on offer, there is definitely something for everyone here.

KIKU is the perfect place for a coffee date or lunch with family, friends, and loved ones! Located on Layards Road, Colombo 5, KIKU is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

During a visit, the Meatless Monday team had many plant-based items to choose from and narrowing down what to try was no easy feat given the extensive menu. We will definitely be back to try the rest. Until then, here’s what we dug into:

Wafu Tofu Pasta

The Wafu Tofu Pasta is a popular item on KIKU’s menu. It is a Japanese fusion classic comprising spaghetti noodles tossed in soy sauce, garlic, and shiitake mushrooms and then topped with perfectly seasoned batter-fried silken tofu steaks. This dish is the epitome of comfort food and is sure to delight your taste buds!

Mushroom Karaage Waffle

Brand new on the menu, the Mushroom Karaage Waffle was the highlight of our meal:

batter-fried abalone mushrooms drizzled with a spicy honey and vegan mayo mayo atop a stack of waffles. The saltiness of the mushroom paired perfectly with the sweetness of the waffle, the creaminess of the mayo, and the spicy chilli glaze, resulting in a spectacular and unforgettable dish.

Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownie

For dessert, we chose the Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownie. This sweet treat is made with homemade peanut butter swirled into a vegan brownie made with avocado. Rich, gooey, salty, and sweet, this decadent plant-based dessert, which is a sizable portion that can be shared between two, is definitely worth trying!

Almond Milk Cappuccino

We paired our delicious chocolatey treat with KIKU’s plant-based cappuccino with almond milk (soy and oat milk options are also available). Our velvety cuppa was rich, creamy, and oh-so-flavourful, with the coffee sourced from local independent micro roaster, Temple Grounds Roasters.
