Vasantha Bhavan (Sister restaurant of Ponnusamy Chettinad Non-Veg)

Vasantha Bhavan is a South Indian inspired restaurant that is operated on Elvitigala Mawatha, Narahenpita. The restaurant caters to both Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian customers and the Meatless Monday Sri Lanka team decided to drop by to try out their vegetarian menu.

Food and Drinks

We decided to try out the South Indian Thali (Rs. 490) and alongside it, we ordered the Paratha (Rs. 270) from the set menu.

Thalis differ from region to region, but the South Indian Thali usually consists of a bowl of rice and an array of small dishes that is usually dhal, vegetables, yoghurt, a chutney or pickle, a roti, a papad and a sweet dish to top it off. The South Indian Thali from Vasantha Bhavan came with a bowl of white rice, a plain chapatti and papadam, surrounded by small dishes of a beetroot curry with coconut and onion, mukunuwenna mellum, tempered cauliflower, a spicy but tart tomato curry, rasam, a sambar (a delicious soup like dish made with lentils) and a sweet sago soup. All in all, it was a delicious dish where you are free to mix and match however you like, and the sweet sago as dessert to complete the meal.

The Paratha we ordered off the set menu came with a sambar (which had carrots, beans, onions and cauliflower in it) and a raita full of onions and chillies. The paratha came in two pieces and it was flaky, buttery and crispy on the edges.

To finish the meal, we ordered Masala Chai (Rs. 90). You could smell all the condiments that come in the Masala tea as soon as it is brought to the table. The tea was not too sweet but it was quite thick with milk. As soon as you drink it you can taste the cardamom and fennel seeping through the tea.

Conclusion

Vasantha Bhavan is a good place to order some cruelty-free vegetarian food if you are craving Indian cuisine for affordable prices.

Their service is quick and the serving staff is well-versed about the menu and happy to answer any questions regarding it.
