A vegan adventure at Upali’s by Nawaloka – Colombo

Sri Lankan rice and curry has a special place in the hearts of food lovers all over the world due to its unique spicy flavours, enticing aromas, visual appeal, and nutritional benefits. During the month of September, the Meatless Monday Sri Lanka team had the opportunity of tasting a variety of these unique flavours offered at Upali’s By Nawaloka – Colombo.    Upali’s is a Sri Lankan cuisine restaurant located in the heart of the capital city which serves up a truly unique local culinary experience and offers diners the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life while being in the very heart of the city. It’s the ideal space to enjoy a hearty local meal with friends, family, or colleagues.    The menu boasts a wide variety of options, including vegan and vegetarian dishes. One of the most interesting food options that caught our attention was the Upali’s signature Vegan Set Menu – served on a banana leaf (kehel kolé) with red rice, tomb bitter gourd curry, dhal curry, and drumstick curry plus accompaniments such as tempered coconut sambol, leafy greens, papadam, and roasted chillies, all of which are deliciously seasoned with local spices. This combination is a delight to anyone who enjoys local cuisine.   A meal like this also consists of many natural benefits, starting off with moringa – which contains amino acids, antioxidants, and cancer prevention properties – and bitter gourd, which is said to benefit those with diabetes and cholesterol-related health issues. This flavour-packed meal has the potential to provide diners a host of required vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.   The Meatless Monday Sri Lanka team was delighted to be able to experience this delicious meal. It is quite welcoming and heart-warming to see local restaurants serving up a variety of locally-sourced vegetarian and vegan food. We look forward to our next visit to Upali’s by Nawaloka to enjoy their delicious spread.
